One of our esteemed Consultants had this to say about this article...
Holy crap that was long!
I think there is too much information for one article. It would have been better received if it was broken up in to separate parts. Each dealing with the different issues in the middle east. They kind of did what they recommend against by lumping everything into one article.
Some of the things I remember:
I agree that we need very intensive diplomacy and that it is probably too much for the sec. of state to tackle alone. Have in special groups that deal with separate issues would probably be a good idea. They would obviously need to work with each other at some level, but that would be the responsibility of the sec. of state and the president.
I think we need to engage with Iran, but it makes me nervous when people start saying that the clock is "ticking". We shouldn't waste time, but I think there is time to do things right. As long as we start soon. You can't wait several years and then say we have time. The time to start working towards a solution is now. But a final solution my take years.
One that that was not mentioned is the high rate of unemployment. You see all of these demonstrations and riots over there. Put people to work and they won't have time to be dissatisfied. If those people had jobs most of them wouldn't have time to cause trouble. They'd be too busy enjoying the work and the lifestyle that the work brings.
